The Countdown Is On To Fifa World Cup!

Barbara Lawlor

FIFA World Cup 2026™ soccer tournament will begin in Toronto on June 12. It will eventually feature a record 104 matches in 16 cities in Canada, Mexico and the U.S. Toronto will host six matches, including the national team’s opening competition, and on July 2 a round of 32 matches. The events will be held at BMO Field (renamed ‘Toronto Stadium’ for the duration of World Cup), home to MLS club Toronto FC and the CFL’s Toronto Argonauts.

To say Toronto residents are excited is an understatement. To mark 100 days to the opening, the City held a free community event, and the CN Tower and Toronto sign were illuminated in blue and green. Participants enjoyed live music, cultural performances, international food offerings, plus autograph sessions with Toronto FC and national team players.

And get ready for the FIFA Fan Festival™ to take place at Fort York National Historic Site and The Bentway during the FIFA World Cup 26™. All ages will be welcome to view live broadcasts of matches on big screens, snack on amazing food, dance to fantastic music, enjoy striking art and soak up fun with fans from around the world.

Soccer is known as “the beautiful game.” To my way of thinking, they couldn’t have chosen a better city to kick off this incredibly popular series. Toronto’s theme is “The World in a City” – appropriate, as it is one of the most cosmopolitan, dynamic, multicultural cities in the world. Welcome FIFA fans – have a wonderful time!
