Canada Ranks High In Air Quality

Barbara Lawlor

We recently celebrated Earth Day, the annual demonstration of support for environmental protection by raising awareness about environmental issues. More than 193 countries observe this special day. In Canada, we have a lot to celebrate in this area, including The Fraser Institute’s recent announcement that Canada ranks 8th best in air quality out of 31 countries in the OECD (Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development) (https://bit.ly/3EzCTJX). The study also ranked countries in the existence of fine particulate matter, pollution from motor vehicles, heating systems, etc., and Canada tied for first (best) with 16 other countries. According to the study, we here in Canada also have a relatively low share of residents exposed to air pollution levels above the World Health Organization’s recommended limit.

The importance of air quality in our daily lives cannot be underestimated. It affects us in both the short-term and long-term. When air quality is low, it can cause everything from respiratory problems to environmental issues and is a major risk factor for premature death. Once again, Canada receives international recognition for yet another component of our high quality of life!
