Toronto Hospital Makes Headlines Once Again

Barbara Lawlor

I never tire of reading about Toronto achieving global status. Recently, University Health Network’s Toronto General Hospital (TGH) was ranked second in the world in Newsweek magazine’s World’s Best Hospitals 2026. This is the highest ranking ever achieved by a Canadian hospital. To facilitate this ranking, the magazine worked with Statista, a German online platform specializing in data gathering collected through team surveys and analysis, to consider 2,500 hospitals across 32 countries.

These hospitals were reviewed and given a score based on four data sources: recommendations from medical experts, hospital quality metrics, existing patient experience data, and Statista’s Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs – standardized, validated questionnaires completed by patients to measure their perception of their functional well-being and quality of life) Implementation Survey.

Special recognition was given to the top 250 institutions worldwide: Mayo Clinic-Rochester (Rochester, Minnesota), Toronto General-University Health Network (Toronto), Cleveland Clinic (Cleveland), Karolinska Universitetssjukhuset (Stockholm) and Massachusetts General Hospital (Boston). Since this annual list was started in 2019, TGH has been named in the top 10. Known for its excellent cardiac care, organ transplants and complex patient needs, TGH boasts world-leading scientists who are working on critical research from cancer and heart disease to viruses and vaccines.

As I have often said, kudos to Toronto for offering such a high quality of life!
